WVU STEPS IN A PILE OF PITT! WVU football can't close out a double-digit lead against the Panthers at Acrisure Stadium, falling to 1-2 on the season and opening up questions about the coaching staff.

Summary

On this week's Got Your Eers On? WVU football loses the handle on a 10 point lead with under 5:00 to play as the Pitt Panthers comeback to win the Backyard Brawl and drop the Mountaineers to 1-2 on the season. We discuss how we arrived at the current situation in year 6 of the Neal Brown era, take a look around the WVU social media landscape, and try to decide how this all unfolds as WVU now faces a tough stretch starting next game against the (also reeling) Kansas Jayhawks. Join us for all this and more on this week’s episode of Got Your Eers On!

Show Notes

  • Fairly even played first half
  • Lot of flags
  • Strength Coach has been emphasizing hand strength: I haven’t seen this many holds since someone compromised my debit card and went on a gas station and Amazon video prime spending spree in Belgium.
  • Several 4 down go for it plays
  • Fake Punt
  • Blocked Punt
  • CJ Donaldson vs Jaheim White
  • Anonymous receiving corps
  • Defensive line good specifically Jackson and French
    • I guess? Seemed to get pressure, but a) could not sack the QB and b) made him look like Mike Vick on numerous scrambles / runs
  • Justin Robinson’s catch Presence of mind vs Athletic play
  • Our Defense is still not good, especially the secondary
  • Defensive Coach issues
  • A bad time in Pittsburgh: confirmed
  • Let’s talk about these Neal Brown Apologists
    • Enough, he’s obviously not a guy who is going to take us anywhere
    • Torches, Pitchforks, For Sale Signs, Go Fund Me’s
    • Gallup Poll State of the Program
  • There’s now a DaysWVUnotRankedinAPpoll (a la the Black Diamond Trophy account) that stands at 2,075 days if your curious
  • @WestByGodWV laid out a multi-post account of all the times Neal Brown has led games late but still came up short following this latest meltdow
  • Jake says the buyout cost is around $10 - $12 million
  • Post Game Presser:
    • “Should Never Lose a Game when you are up 10 with 5 to go”
    • Complained about the Wyatt Milan Hold play… want the officials to explain to him
    • “Didn’t Make Plays”
    • “Didn’t play the deep ball well. it is what it is and have to make some corrections”
    • “Shit, they through for 379… that aint that good”
    • “You are what you are… our personnel are are personnel”
    • When asked about Naduzzi comment that Pitt beat the officials and WVU…. HCNB said “That’s Bullshit”
    • “We have 9 conference games and they are all going to be games like we played today” (YIKES!!)
    • “Unfortunately they threw the ball more than they ran.. wish they would have ran more” (HAHA.. he knows)

How did we get here?

We all know where the fault lies for the current situation, but who has been the supporting cast for causing this current state of affairs? There are many (in no particular order, but maybe somewhat of a timeline order):

  • Pitt (and to a lesser degree, Pat Narduzzi followed by Nicco Marchiol)
    • Pitt was so bad last year (and Nicco up to the task) that, even with our starting QB hurt, Nard dawg and the gang got beat to the tune of 17-6 in a game that barely saw 400 total yards of offense combined (!) and led to fans periodically waking each other up to check the score. This win made everyone a) very happy and b) willing to ignore all the obvious bad stuff.
  • The Big 12 conference
    • There’s so much bad in this conference that, collectively, it was able to make even Neal Brown look like a good power conference coach in 2023. Eight wins over a cast of who cares teams had the entire fanbase high fiving while completely ignoring the double-digit losses to the only three good teams on our schedule.
  • UNC
    • The Tarheels did their part to put a cherry on top of the 8 mediocre wins of 2023 by rostering the people that run their home concession stands into most of their skill position roles for last season’s bowl game. The UNC fanbase also did their part by not showing up to Charlotte (a city that’s in North Carolina), allowing WVU fans to take over and have a mayo party.
  • Mayonnaise
    • In perhaps the only time mayonnaise was able to make something look exciting, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl mayonnaise bath of Neal Brown was essentially the baptism of all of our fears as he was guaranteed a 2024 season (and beyond?).
  • A goatee
    • Boy were we fooled here. The face decoration that made us all go “oh, wow, things really are different”. The Neal Brown pre-Penn State goatee may go down as a style choice for the ages for its ability to draw us all into a false sense of “edginess” that ended up simply being the latest blunt object to beat us over the head.
  • Over apologetic fans, podcasts, and general WVU media
    • Dana left the cupboard (who still says cupboard?) bare. He had to deal with Covid. NIL has been a real challenge. People supported too hard before Penn State and got them too emotional. The list goes on (and is added to daily).
  • Shane Lyons
    • The former AD locked in a horrific contract that (maybe, for like 5 minutes seemed like a good idea) when we thought Auburn or some other school might “steal the Neal” a few seasons ago. The included buyout has hung over Morgantown like a black cloud, and seemingly gave most fans a lobotomy, making them think we just need to stay the course.
